The Role of Social Networking Media in Social and Familial Relations of the Students of Saudi Electronic University in Riyadh Prepared

Abstract

The research problem can be summed up in the answer to the
following main question: What is the role of social networking media in
social and familial relations of the students of Saudi Electronic University
in Riyadh? The study objectives are to reveal the role of social networking
media in students social and familial relations, to get to know the reasons
for the students use of the social networking media, to get to know the
actual state of affairs as regards the use of social networking media by the
students and to get to know the differences in accordance with the variables
of sex, marital status, kind of college and academic level in using social
networking media from the viewpoint of the students. In the present study
the researcher applied the descriptive survey method. The final sample size
amounted to 315 male and female students from the Saudi Electronic
University, 153 of them male and 162 female. The sample was chosen
according to the random strata method. A questionnaire prepared by the
researcher was used.
For achieving the objectives of the study various descriptive and
inductive statistical methods were used through the use of SPSS statistical
analysis program. Among these are arithmetic means, standard deviations,
percentages, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Alpha Cronbach Coefficient,
ANNOVA, and T-test.
The study arrived at the following findings: The actual use by the
male and female students of the Saudi Electronic University of social
networking media is significant. Social networking media most frequently
used are Wattsap at 98. 7%, followed by Instigram at 83. 2%, Twitter at 71.
4% and Facebook at 47. 6% of the study sample individuals. The findings
also showed that 32. 4% of the university students spend five hours and
more in social networking and that the time they prefer is the evening
period, with a percentage of 52. 4% of the sample size. The findings also
revealed that 45. 4% of the students think that social networking hinders
students work, whereas 54. 6% of the students do not think it does. The
findings of the study also revealed that there is a difference in the extent of
support by each of the father, mother and brothers as regards the use of
social networking. The study findings also revealed that the reasons for
using social networking media by the students of the Electronic University
were significant, with an overall arithmetic mean of 3. 90. The study
findings also revealed that social networking have a great effect on social
life with an arithmetic mean of 3. 47, whereas its effect on familial
relations was low.
