The Effectiveness of a Counseling Program on Developing Psychological Flexibility and Self-Esteem for Special Needs Pupils' Teachers

Abstract

The current study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a counseling program on developing psychological flexibility and self-esteem for special needs teachers. The sample consisted of (20) special education teachers. The sample was divided into two groups the first was the experimental group consisting of (10) teachers and the other one was the control group consisting of (10) teachers. The age of the sample ranged from (25:35) years old with an average (30.10) and standard deviation (2.693). The researcher prepared a counseling program and two scales psychological flexibility and self-esteem. The results showed that there was an improvement in the experimental group's participants in terms of psychological flexibility and its sub dimensions; adaptation ability, persistence, positive self-acceptance, and emotional control. Also, the experimental group was distinguished in self-esteem, self-respect, social dimension, and self-competence. Concerning follow-up measurement the results showed the consistency of a positive effect of the program on psychological flexibility and self-esteem variables on the special needs teachers. The researcher recommends expanding counseling and academic programs for teachers in the field of special needs to improve psychological flexibility levels and self-esteem.
