Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of teaching for understanding strategy in developing probing thinking in mathematics among fifth elementary gifted students in Hael city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The sample of the study counted (60) male and female gifted students. To achieve the goals of this study, the researcher used the semi- empirical method as the present study relied, in collecting its data, on a probing thinking test directed to the gifted students after training them on a teaching understanding strategy prepared by the researcher. After training the gifted students on the strategy program, the probing thinking test was applied on the existed sample in the purposive method leading the study to produce the following results: The results revealed an apparent variance in the arithmetic means, the standard deviations and the adjusted means of the students’ test because of the differences in the group variable categories. In order to clarify the statistical differences between the arithmetic means, the researcher used one- wayANOVA, F (8.958) with a statistical significance of (0.04) whereupon the differences came in favor of the empirical method. The results also revealed the non-existence statistical significant differences at (a= 0.05) due to sex as the value of T reached at (1.473) with a statistical significance of (0.152). The researcher suggested a number of recommendations the most prominent of which was the necessity of placing organized plans of teaching for understanding strategy in developing probing thinking in mathematics among gifted students.
